Radio Kosaten is delighted to present #13 edition of its re-programmed series of radio show focusing on issues related to different illegitimate bodies in Japanese society and how these different bodies reclaim their spaces of exception. This Sunday’s feature is an open discussion with Sociologist Johanna Zulueta who specializes on Okinawan migration. In her short description of her research titled “An Invisible Minority? A return migration and ethnicity in Okinawa” she said:　
“This research examines ethnic return migration in Japan by looking at a particular case – that of people of half-Okinawan parentage returning to Okinawa, which I refer to as the Nisei. Here, I look at issues regarding nationality and how the category of ‘Japanese’ tends to conflate race and ethnicity, thus creating boundaries as well as ‘invisible minorities’. I also explore how ethnicity and nationality intersect using this particular case and how these intersections are actually created and enabled through processes of migration. I also discuss how ‘Japanese’ and ‘half’ are both ascribed and self-ascribed identities, and how each of these two categories delineate ‘boundaries’ and hence engage in ‘boundary-making process/es’.”
To deeply understand the invisible minorities in Okinawa and how they affect us, Radio Kosaten #13 would like to outline the following questions: What are the factors that generates quasi-identities in Okinawan society? To what extent is the U.S. military base in Okinawa responsible for producing invisible minorities?
