ギニアという国名そのものが、宗主国の誤解に基づいているとされています。アフリカ大陸西部における富の争奪戦に際し、ヨーロッパの帝国主義-イギリス、フランス、スペイン、ポルトガル、オランダ-が、かつてアフリカ西岸部をまとめて「ギニア」と呼びました。ここから大西洋を介した三角貿易-奴隷貿易-が何世紀にもわたって継続し、近代において、ギニアは1958年に独立を達成するまで、フランスによって70年間統治されました。独立後も政治的緊張は続いています。近年、ギニアはエボラ熱の大流行や大規模なストライキによって国際的に注目を集めています。しかしもちろんそうした厳しい現実だけがギニアの姿ではありません。おいしい料理とトークセッションの中でMamadou DialloさんとDiaraye Bahさんはギニアの複雑な歴史と、見過ごされがちなギニアのポシティブな側面を紹介してくれます。<br />

The very name of “Guinea” is said to be based upon a misconception by its colonizers. Caught in a race to plunder the riches of West Africa, European imperialist powers including Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands at one time referred to the whole of the central West coast of Africa as “Guinea”. It was from here that the Atlantic triangular slave trade was perpetrated for centuries and the modern day Guinea was ruled by France for 70 years before gaining independence in 1958, followed by much political unrest. In recent years the country has mainly come to international attention for its severe cases of ebola and mass strikes. But Guinea is much more than the latest disaster news. Through a delicious cooking and talk session Mamadou Diallo and Diaraye Bah hope to inform us of the complexity of Guinea’s history and the positive stories of the present which are often overlooked.END:VEVENT
